Hello!

Whether you live by the beach or in the snow, winter can get long. Those cloudy skies and being confined indoors can make us all a little buggy before spring rolls around. Why not create "A Day in the Tropics" at your house? It's a fun way to perk things up and dispel "cabin fever"!

Start the day by draping colorful beach towels over the backs of the dining chairs and setting the table on a bright yellow tablecloth (you can get plastic ones at the dollar store, or use a bedsheet!). Twist a streamer and lay it down the center of the table. Use tropical fruits (pineapple, coconut) and tropical fronds cut from green construction paper to decorate the table. Little lizards and frogs make it even more fun! If you have some mood setting nature music, turn it on. The idea is to create a festive spirit to make the sun shine right inside your home!

For breakfast, serve our "Tropical Ambrosia" (kid's cooking instructions). Having the children make breakfast might make the sunshine even brighter at your house!

Wear a mumu or a Hawaiian shirt and your flip flops and sunglasses. Think "bright colors"! Let the kids dress the same. There is something so fun about dressing up for kids--especially when it is impractical weather wise. (You can always put on something warmer if you have to run errands.)

Take a few moments of school time to keep that tropical mood. Try our Tropical Quiz to see how many tropical animals and fruits your kids (and you!) can name.

And finally, here's some special sales right from the tropics to brighten up your day . . . as always, at great discount prices!

Wishing you a sunny day!
Diane Hopkins

P.S. Watch for our deeply discounted "Sale Catalog" coming in your mailbox soon! Every single item in this catalog is on sale, up to 80% off!

Tired? Overwhelmed? Exhausted? You might have a case of "homeschool burnout"! Come read my solution in our popular feature, Question of the Week.

Come catch the vision and help the work along! The gospel is the means to transform the world. Homeschooling is the means to write the gospel deeply on our child's hearts, teaching them how to live right, along with skills and academics. The LDS Homeschooling Organization exists to help every person be successful; to have support, love and friendship as they strive to homeschool. Our mission: to connect LDS homeschoolers worldwide. Our goal: a representative in every stake of the church. You can help by signing up to be a stake representative. (Your privacy is guarded.)

Robinson Crusoe for Children

Take a thrilling adventure with Robinson Crusoe as he is shipwrecked on a tropical island and has to make everything himself out of the things he can find on the island! This favorite books is easy to tackle after a child has mastered phonics, and they always want it to go on forever. I look forward to listening to them read the next section aloud to me, as the story is so interesting. The book starts with very short 'chapters" of just a few paragraphs--well suited to the attention space of a beginning reader--and increases until each chapter is a few pages long at the end of the book This simplified version of the classic Christian story of Robinson Crusoe contains much of the original. Very quaint black-and-white illustrations, large print. Paperback, 105 pages.

Whole Foods From the Whole World  50% off!

Cooking with kids can be so much fun! If you liked making the "Tropical Ambrosia" (recipe above), try some of the fun tropical recipes from this excellent cookbook. Families from all over the world contributed their favorite healthy recipes from appetizers to desserts. The country of origin is listed next to the recipe title so you can really explore the world via food! I found some favorite recipes in this book that I haven't been able to find in all my conventional "Betty Crocker" type cookbooks such as Tex-Mex Dip (that yummy layered Mexican dip served with tortilla chips), Pasta Alfredo, and Hummus (garbanzo beans spread that goes in pita bread to make your own Isreali sandwich). American favorites (potato salad, fruit pizza, and pumpkin pie) are also here. Appendix includes information on using herbs in cooking, and recipes for making your own salt-free seasonings. Ingredients are listed in both standard and metric.
Hardcover and spiral bound.

Sticker Book Questions and Answers

These sticker books are the best we've seen yet! They are extremely educational and fun. Each contains 60 super colorful stickers of the various animals that are grouped by a similar feature, such as fins and scales, birds of prey, things that crawl, etc. Then your child places the sticker (most are 2-3 inches in diameter) on an description page that gives fascinating details about the specific creature. Our family loves these books -- Louisa especially loves learning all about the worms in the Creepy and Crawly book since that is what we are studying now. Each of your children will want their own copy. A great hands-on science course in itself! Softbound, large format 12 pages to put the stickers on and 4 full pages of stickers.

Chewing Gum Kit

Welcome to the sticky business of making your own gum! Kit comes with chicle gum base (the real stuff from the rain forests of Guatemala), confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup, peppermint flavoring, tutti frutti flavoring, and a little container for cooking so you don’t gum up Mom’s nice pan. Nowadays, gum you buy in the store is made from fake stuff: synthetic gum base and chemicals. It is fun to see how it’s really made from the chicle of the Sapodilla tree.

Children Just Like Me

I have never seen anything like this unique and outstanding book! Children all over the world are photographed in their own land, along with their house, their family, their daily food, their school and their toys. It is amazing the effect it has had on my children and myself to read about real children in third world countries that have no shoes or toys. This book has given my children an overview of the world’s people in a very personal way. Brilliant color photography! Hardcover, oversized format, 82 pages--a gem!

Sea Monkeys (Ocean Zoo)

There is something fascinating about growing sea monkeys! My son Ammon sure was enthused to be able to pour a packet full of sea monkey eggs into the tank of water and watch them hatch, and gradually develop and grow larger and larger! No need to clean the tank and they only need feeding every week. Sea monkeys (actually brine shrimp) will live for about 1 year and they even produce babies. This classic science project has been around for decades. Kit includes tank, food, and instructions. Absolutely guaranteed to live.

Hi!

I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 12 to 32) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 18 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.

Hoping to help, if I can!

Love, Diane
